Album Review: TODAY August 30, 2005

Since late 1999, B-Quartet has been wandering.

The band disregards genres and conventions in search for the proper musical language to express the ideals which they hold dear to their hearts. The language conveyed isn't about being unconventional but about challenging conventions varying from songwriting to delivery.

The four-piece has recorded a debut EP, The Smitten Bard. This selection of songs best represents the mindset the band is going through currently.

Being winners of the 2002 Yamaha Asian Beat band competition, B-Quartet is made up of two pairs of brothers who happen to be cousins as well. They blend funk, jazz, metal and progressive rock into a blindingly tight set, reflecting their eclectic tastes in music. Playing with a telepathic ability, their technical prowess on their instruments and their exquisite vocal harmonies have enchanted and mesmerized audiences, winning them fans everywhere they go.

They have been hailed as one of Singapore's "most exciting live acts" by The Straits Times Life! music journalist Sujin Thomas in his article on B-Quartet on Friday 6 May 2005.

1. -

if all the time
the hours pass
it should not matter just how long it feels

if neither ways
there's time to waste
guess standing thinking more is such a shame

if floor's too high
elevators wont reach
than taking stairs should be the only way

if ink could dry
yet erased away
would writing first be the smartest way?

the thought of you
the ever, really, haunting thought of you
the thought of you
the ever, really, haunting thought of you
stays around.

if sky is red
then rain should fall
should dark clouds mean that rain should fall right here?

if sound is seen
it's colours all bold
would music never be the same again?

if 5 was 4
or made to 3
would that mean changing things would be all wrong?

if head played games
should i join or leave?
cause multiplaying's what i hate most 'cause

the thought of you
the ever, really, haunting thought of you
the thought of you
the ever, really, haunting thought of you
stays around.

2. dancing in mind

stars were still in sky,
as those but will she stay
she never had her way
but going everywhere they brought her

and then she had her way
but was she here to stay?
a tale of falling sky
but has she always bothered bout this?

it's all about
the time alone
we spent away
just dancing in mind

it's all about
the way we spoke
the times we tried
just dancing in mind

it's all about
a timeless time
a tale of two
just dancing in mind

it's all about
the struggles took
the turns we had
whilst dancing in mind

she's being very strong
not many of her stayed
for 1 or 2 then down
will she take a turn or always stay there?

i'm dancing in my head
thinking ways to save this damsel
she might not be in distress
but i've been dreaming saving her as

3. table 62

i'm tryin'a find'a link
sitting by this desk
staring down the aisle
watching her just smile
a second thought rushed in
i'm having playful mind
a story yet the truth
the fact of growing fame

the applauds that i hear are just
mindless screams and wails
behind this unlucky desk
more thoughts come rushing in
how naive was i spending all too much
knowing this would be
the cause of all the start

i will
resent if choices weren't for me
i will
be wise when time tells me to choose between
and you'll know

media makes people dumb
media makes people dumb
media makes people dumb
media makes people dumb

i commit to sin
i'm being very kind
and then the hands they clap
they clap and clap away
all these people want
are all the types of her
i just hate the word
they loved it more than her.

(serenaide)

the world will turn amidst your fear
the sun will set despite your tear
the rain will fall amidst your call
the time will run despite your fall

4. alphanumeric

in time it'll fall
the leaves of life
cause none, caused all
keeps hopes on call

now there's there
and people are all over again

there's her, she's there
just there, just there
but hope calls home
hang up? or talk?

could she be all gone?
and these questions, so human, goes on.

choices and questions the base of life
used and done are used again
yet the roots keeps pushing on again
and money makes media whores sell.

august 10
too cold
fell ill
hope called
august 12
too cold
fell dead
can't run

and then
people are all over again.

cliche's aren't new
is hope still true?
when would this feast
of money and fame decease?

i guess
tears for fears was right.

it's just human
to twist the norm
confuse and blind
yet apparent for some
there's just
too much to talk away.

5. dry rain

i came down
got shot dead on the ground
people say there's never any intentions to kill
it's a dream
unintentioned. dry rain came
flash back on the time when
everybody here seemed so real

it's been years since i've seen the truth
this world to me is a day to live
like dry rain falls knowing no such thing
even exists in life
so what's true to the eye?

focus on what's right and you think wrong
never say that you will
listen to what everyone says
it's got none
no topic to sit and think
focus on what you think
will bring up all the best from in you.
